The Florida Keys Council of the Arts will host two free workshops for visual artists on Friday, August 22 at the Gato Building - lobby conference room, 1100 Simonton Street, Key West. The first workshop at 1:00 p.m. will provide information on how to apply for the 2009 South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship program offering awards of $7,500 and $15,000 for Keys’ visual and media artists. Presented by Brandi Reddick of the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs, the workshop will cover a range of topics, including the application process and preparing digital images for submission.
To be eligible, professional artists must be over 18 years of age and have been residents of Monroe County for one year at the time of application. Students and non-professionals who engage in artwork as a hobby are not eligible. Professional artists returning to school in pursuit of an undergraduate or graduate degree may apply. Past local winners include Leo Gullick, Richard Hayden, Rock Solomon, Darlene Pruess, Michel Delgado, Shari Schemmel, Kimberly Narenkivicius, Jenny Zeller and Debra Yates.
Participants are invited to stay for light refreshments following this workshop and prior to the second workshop, “An Artists’ Guide to Applying to Sculpture Key West,” beginning at 3:30 p.m. Karley Klopfenstein, Director of Exhibitions will give a one-hour overview of what artists need to know about applying to the 2009 juried sculpture exhibition, from formatting application materials to the jury process.
The South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowships for Visual and Media Artists is a cooperative project funded by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Broward County Cultural Affairs Council and the Palm Beach Cultural Council through the South Florida Cultural Consortium.
