“LIGHTS UP ON KIDS” – Summer Workshop at the Waterfront Playhouse
Produced by The Key West Players, Inc. - July 21 to August 9, 2008. The Waterfront Playhouse announces the return of “Lights Up On Kids,” a comprehensive summer theatre workshop for children ages 7 to 17. The workshop is produced by The Key West Players and made possible through a generous grant from the Dogwood Foundation. The Players are thrilled to have enlisted Cameron Murray and Daniel Bonnett as co-directors for this three week musical theatre workshop at the Waterfront, which will run July 21 to August 9, 2008.
            The workshop is entitled “Creature Feature,” and will take the participants on a journey through the Broadway musical world of animals, enchanted objects and magical creatures. The spotlight will be on such popular Broadway musicals as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Cats, Suessical and The Jungle Book. The workshop will cover training in all aspects of theatre, including voice, dance, acting, improvisation, mask making, as well as set, costume and prop design and construction. The workshop will culminate in a fully staged production, which will be developed in the workshop and will be open to the public.

So you want to be an Actor?
Now is your chance, Carole MacCartee is offering an adult summer acting workshop beginning June 16th through July 20th, at the Red Barn Theatre, 319 Duval St. Scene Study Class will be Monday and Friday nights from 7-10pm, with a final public performance July 20th. The cost is $240 for the 6 weeks and scholarships are available. The second class offering is a monologue/audition class on Wednesdays, from 7-10pm, beginning June 17th. The cost of the class is $120 for six weeks with scholarships available. Carole MacCartee has been directing in Key West for twenty years and this is the seventeenth year she has been directing the summer acting program at the Red Barn Theatre. She has studied over the past fifteen years at the Shakespeare Theatre Arena Stage, The Studio Theatre in Washington D.C., the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Ireland, and the New Actor’s Workshop in New York City. SOL FEST 2008 - June 16-July 11
Applications being taken for children between 5-18 years of age. All classes are age appropriate and broken down by levels. There will be a non-refundable enrollment fee of $30 (administrative, music and costume cost) due with application. Subjects covered will be: Vocal Technique: Stressing breathing, relaxation, characterization and creativity; Repertoire: All students study the great works of classical, opera and Broadway; In the Spotlight: Musical Theater, Acting, Improvisation and scenes from shows will be a daily activity; The Art of Dance: Study all basic dance steps and learn choreography from your favorite shows. Students can also sign up for the Dance class learning ballet, tap, modern and hip hop; I Can Hear Clearly Now: Ear training teaches relative pitch, hearing harmonies, melodic and rhythmic dictation and solfege; Keyboard Skills: A keyboard lab will be used for beginners and more advanced students. Beginners learn to find their way around a keyboard. Advanced students will study improvisation and harmonies; Drums of Steel: Learn the basics of rhythm, drumming and playing a steel pan. Various levels of instruction will focus on technique singing your part, bringing out a great tone from your pan and the art of improvising. CAMP and Careers 2008, now in its 6th year currently accepting applications.
The Educational Coalition for Monroe County (ECMC) in collaboration with Monroe County School District and Florida Keys Community College presents the Cultural American Music Program (CAMP) and Careers 2008. Applications are currently being accepted from 7th-12th grade students. 6th annual program! NEW in 2008 for 9th-12th grade students: two career focused programs for non-music students. Culinary arts/hospitality management/tourism and film/video productions offered for dual enrollment credit for non-music students and as elective choices for music students. High school and DE credit available to qualifying students. Limited intern positions are available for FKCC college students and Monroe County teachers.

CAMP runs June 14-July 19 at Marathon School. Countywide transportation is provided. Public, private & home school students are invited to apply. Train with world renowned instructors: winds, percussion, brass, guitar (bass, classical), vocals, physical performance/theatre, rhythm, Stomp, ballroom dance, film, and culinary arts! MUSIC STUDENTS MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE YEAR PREVIOUS VOCAL OR INSTRUMENTAL INSTRUCTION (private lessons, school band, or school chorus).

Junior CAMP is open to 4-6 grade students; limited space is available based on teacher recommendation. The Keys Community Concert Band invites local amateur musicians to participate in its 2007-2008 "Pops in the Park" concert season. Susan Bazin, Music Director at Key Largo Schools, will direct the Keys Community Concert Band in weekly rehearsals. The Band is open to musicians of any age with a playing ability at the high school level. There are no auditions. Musicians are welcome to join at any time during the performing season. Panel Artist Opening: The recently relocated Bougainvillea House Gallery of Marathon has an opening for a half, or full, space panel artist effective May 1st. Florida Keys Art Guild Art Scholarship – All Monroe County graduating seniors who plan on majoring in the visual arts are welcome to apply for this grant. The Florida Keys Art Guild will be offering this scholarship opportunity to students from the three public high schools, Island Christian School, as well as students who have been home schooled. Art work from interested students will be on display at the Bougainvillea House Gallery. Viewing will be from May 6 through May 12, and the Florida Keys Art Guild will be announcing the scholarship recipients during graduation ceremonies at area High Schools. 2008 Holiday Card - Call to Artists
The Key Deer Bookstore, operated by all-volunteer non-profit Friends And Volunteers Of Refuges (FAVOR) is seeking artwork for our 2008 holiday card. FAVOR has 4 symbol animals representing the four National Wildlife Refuges that we support. The National Key Deer Refuge was represented in 2006, the Key West National Wildlife Refuge in 2007. This year The Great White Heron Refuge will be represented.

THEME GUIDELINES: FAVOR’s third annual holiday card will feature the Great White Heron and / or other birds that can be seen in the refuge. Photography will not be accepted. Art that will appeal to both tourists AND locals will be favored. Art must be able to reproduce well on a standard card (Anywhere from 4.25x5.5 to 5x6-7/8). Winning artist will get a bio in the card, 24 free cards, additional cards at cost, and free newspaper publicity. FAVOR will also run a “people’s choice” contest to get free publicity for 6-10 runners up.

Promising Monroe County high school students in grades 9 through 12 (public, private, parochial or home school) are encouraged to apply for one several talent scholarships offered by The Studios of Key West, a non-profit arts community. TSKW campus is based in the historic armory building at 600 White Street, Old Town.

The scholarship will award participation in one of the almost 50 visual or literary arts workshops offered at TSKW, under personalized instruction in a variety of disciplines taught by accomplished regional and national figures. TSKW Scholarships will cover the full cost of enrollment, instruction, and materials valued at up to $1000. Just 4 Kids Community Art Center needs volunteer artists! Judi Bradford’s plein-air acrylic painting classes in the shady Audubon House garden, 205 Whitehead Street, have resumed for winter season. Classes are offered in weekly sessions for adults on the historic property. Materials are provided and scholarships are available.
Tuition is $25 per class of instruction. Students can pay by the class. Materials are supplied.
The classes mix beginners and experienced students and participants learn from each other as well as the instructor.
Bradford has been teaching art classes for twenty years at museums and in private locations while doing illustration and commercial art.
