Milton Esterow Has Fun with Art at the San Carlos

ARTnews magazine editor Milton Esterow delivered a relaxed and entertaining workshop on buying and collecting art at the San Carlos Institute in Key West on January 25.

Sprinkled liberally with humorous anecdotes from his years as a reporter for the New York Times and other publications, Mr. Esterow's talk satirized the pretentious verbiage often used to describe art and encouraged experts and laypersons alike to trust their instincts.

More than sixty participants attended the special event for members of the Monroe Council of the Arts. (About two dozen newcomers joined at the door.) The audience comprised gallery owners, artists, and individual art lovers of all ages and levels of experience. Mr. Esterow graciously answered their perceptive questions.

A reception, catered by Fausto's Food Palace, followed in the historic San Carlos foyer. Participants took home complimentary copies of ARTnews (containing a special feature on the Florida Keys) and publications describing the Arts Council's ever-increasing variety of programs, events, and opportunities.

Mr. Esterow's appearance was arranged by Arts Council board member Nance Frank, owner of the Gallery on Greene.
