A kinetic sculpture mounted on the fire station's exterior wall, featuring wind-driven stainless steel elements that rotate and sway in the ocean breeze. The perpetual motion of the piece reflects the dynamic energy of the working waterfront community on Stock Island.
“Current & Tide” is the newest addition to the Florida Keys’ public art collection, installed at the Stock Island Fire Station in 2022. Kinetic sculptor Jorge Blanco designed the work to harness the persistent trade winds that sweep across Stock Island, creating a sculpture that is never still and never quite the same from one moment to the next.
The piece consists of a central stainless steel mast from which radiate a dozen articulated arms, each tipped with a curved blade form inspired by the shapes of boat propellers and fish fins. Even in light breezes, the elements rotate and oscillate independently, producing a mesmerizing choreography of reflected light and gentle motion. In stronger winds, the entire assembly becomes more animated, its movements echoing the energy of the working waterfront just blocks away.
Blanco, a Venezuelan-born artist known internationally for his kinetic public sculptures, engineered the piece to withstand sustained winds of one hundred fifty miles per hour, meeting the stringent building code requirements for Monroe County coastal construction. The sculpture’s stainless steel construction requires minimal maintenance and is designed to develop a subtle surface texture over time from exposure to salt air, a quality the artist considers an integral part of the work’s evolution.
